Your little time and not finding other people with L4 capabilities seem to be a bottleneck and showstopper here, for the moment. (5 years now?) But we should not let that stop the whole project. We should still continue to develop the user/high-level parts. I suggest using two parallell paths. The second being that someone will continue developing from the 0.3.15 release that I was responsible for (but trying to keep away from kernel parts that in the future will be replaced by L4. Then at a later stage, do a merge when the L4 part is ready.) The 0.3.15 release contains features like: DCL client shell. DCL utilities copy, delete, directory, search, type, show device/system/logical/working_set. RMS/ODS-2. RTL libraries with STR$ and LIB$. Approx. 50 system services. Essential VMS kernel features for ASTs, event flags, locks, scheduling, time support, process control, working set, QIO, mailboxes, logicals etc. Internet connection with CMUIP. The last release of something that could be used, 0.3.15, was almost 5 years ago, and we should reconsider the strategy. All we have available now is an image that boots, and says FreeVMS 0.4.0 (R), and some other lines with the word FreeVMS/VMS, and then ends with "%RUN-S-STOPPED, PAGER.SYS process stopped", and can not be used for anything. That is IMHO many big steps back from the 0.3.15 image with a DCL command line that could actually do something, and not something that inspires new people to join and develop. I will try to get hold of some 0.3.15 image, but currently it is stuck on some server that has some serious networking problem, so it is not possible to download yet, but I will come back to this when I succeed. -- Regards, Roar Thronæs From rmctwo at gmail.com Fri Aug 1 17:36:42 2014 From: rmctwo at gmail.com (Renee) Date: Fri, 1 Aug 2014 11:36:42 -0400 Subject: [FreeVMS] Current status? If you want, I can open for you a read/write access on git server. http://www.freevms.net/gitweb/ I think we have to write documentation before restarting... After dropping gcc-3.3 in the Makefiles, the kernel built without errors, but crashed when starting up both DCL and sash. (Kernels are very sensitive to GCC changes.) Both the default linker and FreeVms image linker needed changes in the linker scripts, but otherwise most of the selected build went fine. Much pre-written documentation is already available. Trailing-edge has important books like: EY-C171E-DP VMS Internals and Data Structures 5.2 1991 EY-F575E-DP VMS File System Internals 1990 EL-00032-00-decStd32 Jan90, an internal Vax Architecture Reference Manual A lot of the source are based on books like these. (I have used some newer internal books for some parts.) But there is also unique parts, like how the Linux read/write system calls are dispatching file activity towards FreeVms RMS parts. Many things like that will have to be figured out by one self (kernel work demands much ability), or at least ask about it. -- Regards, Roar Thronæs From roart at nvg.ntnu.no Wed Aug 6 14:14:19 2014 From: roart at nvg.ntnu.no (Roar =?iso-8859-1?Q?Thron=C3=A6s?=) Date: Wed, 6 Aug 2014 14:14:19 +0200 Subject: [FreeVMS] Current status? Browse or do git clone https://github.com/rroart/freevms (master branch). I have no plans for new features. I will only do major bugfixes related to the upgraded build environment. In addition to environment update, (yes, x86_64 kernel now uses modern gcc, and is less unstable) a lot of dead/unused Linux source code has been removed. The purpose is to make it more accessible for developers who may take it over. There is also a webpage on http://www.pvv.org/~roart/freevms.html with some brief information. -- Regards, Roar Thronæs
