Well, Rien, I have one word for you: Linux.

So, yes, I do believe that it's possible.

By "Free" I don't mean cost.  I suppose I should have been clearer for people in the old school crowd.  No... by Free I mean open and free to modify as in Freedom.

Well, Gregory, Bruce *does* have a point here.
For the mere cost of joining Encompass (or the equivalent organisation 
in your country) you can have the hobbyist license and run *real* VMS on 
your PC for no more money than that.
You can't *really* believe that a small group of affectionados can 
reproduce the work of hundreds of engineers of over 30 years to create 
PC-VMS as an equivalent implementation of the real thing...
Believe me, I'm a real VMS bigot, I've worked for Digital for 30 years, 
of which 25 years as a VMS engineer, but there is no way you're going to 
implement this wonderful OS on a PC without considerable effort.
